verdict: two stars.
the story revolved around a lucky charm that is a photograph, a broken family, and a third party. being the Nicholas Sparks that he is, he included an element alongside romance. this time it wasn't science, but the war and military.
the fact that it took me months to retrieve the book from my mini-shelf is already a big thing. you can expect me to finish a Sparks novel in less than two days. unluckily though for "The Lucky One," it stayed sleeping in my shelf for two or so months after i read its first few leaves.
as i've already mentioned in the blog i wrote this morning, the first part was rather boring. it didn't have the "Nic Sparks feel" that usually welcomes me every time i start his novels.
i fought my way into reading and digging the gem that is hidden in the book.
i was engaged in the story halfway into the novel, but i couldn't miss saying that the pacing was slow. a lot of things were already going on in my mind but the pages fly by without much progress in the story.
the climax happened when there were only a few pages to the end of the novel. the problem was resolved that quick. slow start and abrupt ending? it just doesn't seem like Nicholas Sparks.
the story failed to capture and grip me all over. it did not make me cry. it's really something because Sparks novels always make me cry. for the novels that i read before this - At First Sight, The Notebook, and The Wedding - i cried my eyes out, and really felt like i'm one of the characters in the novel.
Sparks was still the good storyteller that he was in this novel. i could still picture the scenes from the way his words described. i still give him a hands down for the way he paints the pictures in my mind. i think the plot just didn't work out this time.
i counted on a great ending. it is Sparks' trademark to make a huge twist in the end that would simply make the readers' worlds turn upside down. with this one, the end was ordinary and predictable. it didn't shock me the way the ending in The Wedding did nor did it leave me reflecting the way The Notebook ended. it tore my heart, yes, but it wasn't just the same.
for me, the story ended just like that.

anyway, i hope Three Weeks With My Brother (hi, nina!) and The Last Song would not disappoint me as much.
